DAPPLED
CITIES FLY - BIOGRAPHY - May 2003
1997.....what a year it was. Communism came to power in tsarist Russia, the domestication of the three toed sloth was fast becoming a reality, and in a bedroom in suburban Sydney two barely teenage lads experimented with Nirvana covers, a few originals and the feedback function of a Boss DF-2 stomp box.
It wasn't quite Marshall stacks and platform shoes but, damn it, it was fun!
2002 and although the teen angst has all but disappeared the two are now part of a vibrant four piece, more concerned with living and playing music like it's worthwhile than brooding over whether or not their shoe laces have been tied in the hippest manner. The feedback fetish has been replaced with a not altogether unhealthy obsession with delays and major 7th's. The Kurt-like creations have given way to manic meanderings more in the ilk of Pavement or an earlyish Gerling. Occasionally the likes of Augie March, Radiohead and The Sleepy Jackson find their way into the box of muses.
Meet Dappled Cities Fly. Sitting somewhere between Pavement and an episode of Sesame Street, the DCF lads are infused with the kind of youthful schizoid enthusiasm all too rare in music these days.
Since the band's live debut in April 2001, all at the tender age of eighteen, Dappled Cities Fly have released two singles - Be Engine/Sputnik and Chameleon Girl, both supported by JJJ, toured the East Coast 5 times and are about to tour to WA. And that’s only in the space of the last 7 months!
